Top South African Journalist, Bheki Letswayo has accused the President of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), Dr. Ahmad Ahmad of running the football governing body as his own family.
According to the veteran Journalist, Dr. Ahmad is running CAF like it is his personal affair and it is a situation which needs to be addressed. His comments comes on the back of South Africa losing out on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights to North African giants Egypt.
The decision to take this year’s AFCON to Egypt was taken yesterday, 8 January 2019 following a CAF Executive Committee meeting held at the Terrou-Bi Hotel in Dakar, Senegal.
Speaking to Accra based Class FM yesterday, Bheki stressed that South Africa is disappointed after being denied the opportunity to host the rest of Africa later this year.
“We are so highly disappointed and mostly highly disappointed in the way CAF President Ahmad Ahmad is running CAF. “He is running CAF like his own family. Like his own affair. So most definitely I believe that a lot needs to be done as far as this issue is concerned.
“I must spell it very clean and clear that South Africa is so highly disappointed”, he said.
He further indicated that South Africa stands out tall to host the competition taking into considerations the state of the art facilities they have at their disposal. He opines that having hosted successfully the World cup in 2010 without any hindrances, they would have perfectly been able to host the AFCON.
Bheki insists the relationship between South Africa together with the Politics within the running of CAF denied them the chance to be given the hosting rights.
“I think the relationship between South Africa and football and CAF did have an impact on what transpired. Also the Politics in CAF that made South Africa not to host the prestigious event”, he said
